The Reason I Made This Blog

Also the reason I’ve become much more involved in human rights and freedom of expression: my “Communication and Participation of Civil Society in the Internet” class at the Universidad de Carlos III in Madrid.

The name of the course itself doesn’t do the class justice – the wide range of topics we discussed cover so much more than just the Internet. Although, I learned a lot about the Internet. So much, I should be scared of the Internet but instead, have learned to use it to my advantage. To promote justice, ideas and free expression.

The reason I say I should be scared of the Internet is because the course began with an assignment to watch the film “We Live in Public.” I highly recommend it. It was by far my favorite topic because it hit home. I was able to realize how much truth was portrayed in the film about society today, as an active user of the Internet. Josh Harris, the man with the idea behind the film, basically predicted apps like InstagramFacebook and Snapchat the way we use them today.

I don’t want to spoil the film – because you really should watch it – but Josh Harris decides to film a group of people living together, and later himself and his girlfriend, 24/7. Everything they do. Everything. Not a single detail of their private lives was censored, or hidden. How would you react to being filmed all day, in what used to be your most private of times? He captures a true human emotion and response to such a situation.

What you come to realize is that with the Internet’s growth, we now seek attention more than we seek privacy.

And this is a scary thought.

Use the Internet in the right way. It’s an extremely powerful tool that our society is lucky to have today. If used correctly, it can educate and save the world.

This is what freedom of expression and online communication is all about.

Free Expression is the power to educate and save the world through the spread of ideas, knowledge and self-autonomy.

Like Kentucky Fried Chicken? Don’t. Warning: Not for the Faint of Heart.

I’m sure you know what Kentucky Fried Chicken is. It’s a fast food restaurant chain that specializes in “finger lickin’ good” fried chicken. It was one of the first fast food chains to expand internationally, and it’s the world’s second largest chain after McDonald’s. It has approximately 18, 875 outlets in 118 countries.

But do you know about Kentucky Fried Cruelty?

KFC suppliers cram birds into huge waste-filled factories, breed and drug the chickens to grow so large that they can’t even walk, often causing them to break their wings and legs.

At slaughter, the chickens’ throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding hot water – often while they are still conscious.

KFC’s own animal welfare advisors have asked the company to take steps to eliminate these abuses, but KFC refuses to do so. Many advisors have stopped trying due to the frustration.

KFC would not be able to abuse dogs, cats, pigs, or cows in these ways. It would be illegal. Why aren’t chickens on this list?

PETA is fighting for the rights and lives of these chickens.

Watch this video by Pamela Anderson for an inside scoop on what happens behind the scenes for that bucket of fried chicken you love.

More than 850 million chickens are killed each year this way.

If you’re not yet convinced, watch this campaign video. It hits.

The People’s Choice Award allows people to vote online for their favorite blog. This one will be awarded in a language-specific category.

I chose to vote for a blog under the category of Most Creative and Original. Creativity and originality is vital in grasping the attention of others. All of these blogs have important information and a specific purpose to promote human rights and freedom of expression. They need to be read and understood. In order for this to be widespread, it must engage the targeted audience(s). Being creative and original should do the trick.
With this, I am voting for a Spanish website, “Del dicho al hecho.” As the description states, the website is a “clear and engaging way to monitor whether the words spoken by candidates match their actions when they take office.”

The concept of the website is extremely original, something I have not heard of before. It has a comment area, stirring and encouraging discussion of the topics posted. It calls out leaders for their lies and their truths. It brings awareness for citizens. It reminds us to carefully read between the lines said by political actors. As a Cuban and German, this pulls on my heartstrings.

“This is about people who are making a difference in their countries.
Speaking out and risking their lives.”
